Casa Giron - A Beautiful Place to Stay in Oaxaca City Home
if you are looking for a lovely place to stay with a friendly family feel, this is the place for you.
there are five guest rooms total, which surround a pretty courtyard on two floors. two of the rooms have 2 double beds. the other three rooms have queen beds. all rooms have private bathrooms, and three of them have private small kitchens. all are large, airy, comfortable, and clean. there is in-room bottled water for $1.50 per gigantic bottle. no air-conditioning, but there are fans that you will likely not need because the rooms stay cool throughout the day.
the location is great -- it is just five blocks west from the zocolo and similarly close to santa domingo cathedral. right around the corner is a beautiful cathedral (virgen de la soledad) and a lively plaza full of little ice cream stands. you are also close to the big grocery store and there is a laundry place right outside the door. the exact location is matamoros 502 (on the block west of crespo street). the neighborhood is safe.
casa giron is run by a couple, concepcion and carlos, who live on the property. they have grown children, and little grandchildren who are around sometimes. this is the type of place where they are no locks on the bedroom doors...something that undoubtedly seems strange to those from the u.s., but it really is okay (even for a single woman traveler with expensive cameras!)
more particulars:
for one person, all rooms are $16 per day including a home-cooked breakfast, or $14 per day without breakfast. for two or more people sharing a room, it is $14 each with breakfast, or $12 each without breakfast. kids are somewhat less and those less than 6 years old are free.
